S T O R Y
Travelling to Philippines for 2 months on a tropical island, riddled with jungle, caribous and incredible people. Despite not knowing any Cebuano (local language), I lived in a house connected to a street of bustling people. One dirt road connected us all.
But it was one particular day that this painting was inspired of. I was waiting for my motorbike to be fixed in a local tiny mechanic... and as I was stranded I was watching the street. Opposite me was a tree line that seemed quite odd. I looked closely and within the tree line was streams of melted gold seeping in from behind. I was curious and in awe of what looked like golden fire melting those trees. I walked through the jungle to come to a standstill beyond a hut. From behind this hut, a golden circle lit a ring of fire on the floor in front of my feet and due to complete awe, I slowly stepped in.
Instant heat and blinding light pounded me. I followed the source of the light and saw something incredible. Rolling fields of rice all sat in a golden haze. The shallow water of the field reflecting the golden sun looking like something from the lost city of gold. And a single caribou stood perfectly still with birds adorning him like jewels and insects swarming like a frame for his presence. The caribou looked up and I stood in the sweat of the sun in this one moment in time completely taken. This painting represents my trip. Enjoy the chemistry and travel with me. Okjah is the name of the caribou.
